How to choose your studies

Asa student you have many decisions to make before you know which course to study, which study provider to use and in which city you may enjoy studying most. Follow this step-by-step guide to help you on your way.

The following is a step by step plan of the process you will need to go through to study in Australia. This includes all student visa related information and links, plus useful tips.

Steps:

1. Objectives

  • Define what would you like to achieve. (Career, international experience...)
  • Select what type of education that fits your objectives. (University, Vocational Studies, School, English training...)
  • Define what field of study would you like to follow. (Business, Information Technology, Engineering...)
  • Choose your city of preference. (Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane...)
  • Decide when would you like to start your studies. (Year and Term)

2. Course and Institution Selection

  • Search for the most appropriate degree/course based on your selected type and field of education.
  • Select a list of institutions that provide the selected degree/course.
  • Enquire about course specifics and the institutions' support services for international students.
  • Select your institutions of preference.
  • Verify you meet the entry requirements and the English language requirements.
  • Book and take your English test.

3. Costs

  • Confirm subject/course cost.
  • Confirm the number of subjects/courses needed for the degree you have selected and calculate the total degree cost.
  • Calculate your living expenses including: rent, meals, entertainment, phone, books, clothing, groceries...
  • Consider the costs required for the Visa application and document translations.
  • Verify availability of scholarships and loans.

4. Admission

  • Obtain the application form.
  • Collect all the documents required by the institution.
  • Translate all documents that are not in English.
  • Submit the application form along with all required documents.
  • Receive your offer of admission (depending on your application results).
  • Pay your tuition fees according to the institution and Visa requirements.
  • Obtain medical insurance - Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC).
  • Receive your confirmation of enrolment (eCOE).

5. Visa

  • Obtain updated information on student visas at the Australian Embassy or from www.diac.gov.au
  • Obtain the visa application forms.
  • Fill out your visa application form, confirm that you meet all requirements and have all necessary documentation.
  • Submit your application to the nearest Australian Embassy or DIAC office and receive your visa

6. Pre Departure

  • Receive your institution’s information package.
  • Organise finance, accommodation and transport.
  • Check with your institution if there are pre-departure sessions available.
  • Advise your institution of your arrival details in Australia.

7. Arrival

  • Arrange airport transfer to your accommodation with your institution.
  • Attend the orientation program provided by the institution.
  • Open a bank account at a local bank.
