One of the most important decisions to make is where to live. The cost of housing varies according to the type of accommodation and location you want.
General cost of living
International students must meet the cost of general course fees, books, travel, health insurance and living expenses in addition to their tuition fees. The amounts below do not include the cost of establishing a household.
- To live in Melbourne you will need approximately A$15,000 per year
- If you have an adult dependant living with you will need an extra A$4,000 per year
- If you have dependent children you will need approximately $3,000 per child

Accommodation costs
Accommodation can be booked before you arrive. Two weeks advance notice is required before you depart for Australia. Further details can be obtained from the International Student Welfare Officer.
It is also important to consider the cost of electricity, gas and water. Some accommodation options include these expenses in the monthly rent. Generally, when you live in an apartment, you only pay for gas and electricity. In a house, you will pay for water as well.
Average rental costs (per week) in Melbourne:
- 1 Bedroom Apartment: $170 - $280
- 2 Bedroom Apartment (per bedroom): $120 - $180
- House 2/3 bedroom (per bedroom): $120 - $190
- Utility Cost: $5-$10 per week.
